The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded $4.37 million to create new Centers of Excellence in Public Health Informatics at four U.S. institutions, AHA News Now reports. The recipients, including Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Indiana University, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Utah, will participate in projects aimed at unearthing strategies and tools that increase the ability of health departments, physicians and other care providers to promote health and prevent diseases, injuries or disabilities. Each center will be required to use the funding to conduct two new projects that support the CDC's interest in informatics and real-time surveillance of emerging public health threats through immediate access to data from hospitals and health care systems in major metropolitan areas. For example, projects planned at the University of Utah are expected to build on the Rocky Mountain Center for Translational Research in Public Health Informatics, which was supported by a previous center of excellence grant. Specifically, research will focus on Visual Analytics and Decision Support for Core Public Health Missions and Just-In-Time Delivery of Dynamically Maintained Public Health Knowledge. AHA News Now notes that five other centers have previously received funding for informatics projects (AHA News Now, 9/25/09; CDC release, 9/25/09).
