The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released two new tools designed to help emergency planners prepare alternate care sites in the event of a public health emergency, AHA News Now reports. According to the AHRQ Web site, the Disaster Alternate Care Facility Selection Tool was created to help "institutions and communities select a temporary alternate care facility or facilities during a public health emergency over a small geographic area." Emergency planners can use the tool to rate the necessity of various features at up to six facilities at a time for a specific emergency event. The tool then automatically compares the suitability of each facility for a specific event. The second tool, known as the Alternate Care Facility Patient Selection Tool, helps users determine which patients are eligible for transfer to an alternate care site (AHA News Now, 10/2/09; AHRQ Web site).
