Pharmacist Group Launches Effort to Immunize Health Workers Against Seasonal Flu

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists has launched a Web site designed to help pharmacists improve immunization rates for the seasonal flu among health care workers, HealthLeaders reports. Developed with the help of a panel of experts, the online resource center includes a series of tools and materials, including an immunization campaign toolkit with ready-made tools and templates to help users launch an initiative at their own facilities and space to share stories about successful immunization efforts at various facilities. In addition, the Web site includes a customizable immunization goal thermometer that pharmacists can use to involve fellow staff members in immunization efforts. Under a second facet of the initiative, the group will award two grants to researchers who demonstrate how a pharmacist's role can be been focused on flu prevention by promoting immunization. According to society officials, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to lead an immunization campaign because they can dispel the various misconceptions about the flu vaccine and reassure health care workers about the safety of the vaccine (Comak, HealthLeaders, 10/12/09).
