Blacksburg-based Virginia Tech's Virginia Bioinformatics Institute has received a $27.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish an infectious disease database, the Roanoke Times reports. Announced by Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Va.), the grant will support five years of work on the infectious disease database, known as the Pathogen Portal, and cover the cost of 20 full-time researchers. The portal is designed to give scientists access to infectious disease data and analysis from around the world that allows them to combat influenza and other emerging infectious diseases (Moxley, Roanoke Times, 10/13/09).
