Joint Commission Identifies Top 10 Smoking Cessation Programs

The Joint Commission has identified the top 10 smoking cessation programs in the United States, the Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum reports. Appearing on the list was Bucyrus Community Hospital in Ohio, which became the first tobacco-free hospital campus in the state in June 2004. The hospital offers a smoking cessation program funded by a grant through the Ohio Department of Health. Together with various community partners and other stakeholders, the hospital seeks to help members of the local community quit smoking. For example, the hospital was recently notified that it had received grant funding for a dental needs program for smoking cessation program participants, to be offered in connection with the Third Street Dental Clinic in Mansfield. According to program organizers, smoking causes numerous dental problems, including gum disease (Gasuras, Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum, 10/21/09).
