Bloomington Public Health in Minnesota has received a $1.6 million appropriation from the state legislature to support efforts to promote healthier environments, the MN Sun reports. Awarded as one of 10 implementation grants, the funding will be divided among three Minnesota cities over the next two years. Specifically, the cities will use the funding to address poor nutrition, sedentary behaviors and tobacco use. For example, schools may use the funding to develop wellness committees to strengthen existing policies regarding nutrition and physical activity. Elsewhere in the community, initiatives could include researching local farmers' markets; creating safer routes to schools; establishing biking, walking and recreation facilities; and drafting walking maps. Meanwhile, health care facilities may use the funding to develop staff training and pilot prevention guidelines for chronic diseases (Kroeker, MN Sun, 10/29/09).
